Aspirations in the New 14+ Curriculum:
Implications and solutions

The Course

This course has been designed to give colleagues confidence and solutions to meet the changing developments post 14. It will give an opportunity to explore, discuss and address the main 14+ issues which have arisen from recent announcements.

The course will provide practical solutions to tackling students' levels of attainment, achievement, motivation and engagement. In addition, new and developing curriculum models post 14 will be explored which attempt to meet the needs of the student and help raise their aspirations. Strategies that support school systems will be balanced by classroom based approaches.

The course aims to:

  • Provide an overview of 14+ national developments
  • Discuss the key features of the government's long term vision for 14+
  • Assist schools in developing appropriate progression opportunities 14+
  • Explore coherent curriculum models and pathways at Key Stage 4
  • Focus on strategies for raising levels of achievement in the 14+ curriculum

  • Aspirations, achievements and progression at each Key Stage
  • Implications and solutions to recent government announcements
  • Examining the achievement issues in your school
  • Establishing leadership and management roles to support the changing curriculum

11.00 Session 2 Strategies to raise achievement and aspirations at school level
  • the key factors necessary to motivate students and maximize achievement
  • the use of learning to learn programmes
  • individual student reviews and their use

12.15 Session 3 Strategies to raise attainment and motivation at classroom level
  • understanding the learning process
  • interactive teaching approaches explained
  • using formative assessment procedures to raise attainment
  • self esteem and the development of skills for learning

  • planning the curriculum to increase individuality and develop skills and intelligences
  • creating space at Key Stage 4 to allow students to pursue their talents and aspirations

  • case studies and working models where flexibility is being addressed

Course Leader

Chris Haines is a full time trainer running many In Service Training sessions at a national level. He has recently completed a very successful series of training sessions for Subject Leaders through the Beacon School initiative.  He works closely with many schools and has a reputation for providing solutions that work. He is an expert on learning, memory techniques, formative assessment and the skills needed for effective classroom leadership.
.His work is highly valued in schools taking a stimulating and pragmatic approach to current issues in the classroom. He continues to work closely with the Institute of Education, London on long term school based projects as well as leading the Effective Teaching and Learning Network
