Focus

The essential skills students require have been identified with care. These skills are concerned with:

  • maximizing performance in examinations
  • taking an active and engaging part in lessons through listening, concentrating and thinking
  • developing independence, confidence and initiative for use outside of school

All are concerned with maximizing their potential. The secret of the approach is that there is an emphasis on
teaching specific skills. This involves finding out from students how they themselves learn, remember, process information, listen, reflect and think. Great use is made of the techniques to assist memory, listening, concentration, understanding and thinking.

The skills identified include

  • thinking
  • listening
  • concentration
  • questioning
  • memory
  • visualising
  • responding to feedback
  • self reflection
  • information handling
  • time management
  • note taking and making
  • learning preferences
  • revision
  • examination skills
  • study skills
  • applying 'learning to learn' skills to specific subjects
