A CPD Masterclass for Heads of Department and
Subject Leaders led by Chris Haines


This Insight Day has been designed for aspiring and existing Heads of Department.  It will link leadership and management and address the skills essential to support and develop staff and manage change.

It will provide participants with the confidence and solutions to meet the changing needs of a Subject Leader.  The programme will address the skills essential to support and manage change and bring coherence to the role of head of department/subject leader  (ie lesson observation, effective feedback, leadership styles etc).


Insight Focus:

The day will focus on the issues of:

  • The new role and skills of the subject leader
  • Quality assurance issues
  • Leadership styles
  • Managing colleagues
  • Lesson observation and feedback
  • The skills of the coach and the team leader
  • Key conditions for effective departments
  • The evidence base needed to support quality
  • How to deal with difficult staff

The important link between leadership and management will be emphasised throughout the day.  A framework will be provided to help Heads of Department identify their key priorities and to focus on what has been shown to work.

All course members will receive:

Session 3:
Quality Assurance

  • Strategies to monitor the progress of students and staff
  • The quality assurance role of the Head of Department
  • Key ingredients of an evidence base to support quality


Session 4: 
Skills of the Team Leader

  • Tips for observing lessons
  • The importance of constructive feedback and coaching
  • Managing difficult situations and the implications of performance management

Course Leader

Chris Haines is a full time trainer running many In Service Training sessions at a national level. He has recently completed a very successful series of training sessions for Subject Leaders through the Beacon School initiative.  He works closely with many schools and has a reputation for providing solutions that work. He is an expert on learning, memory techniques, formative assessment and the skills needed for effective classroom leadership.
.His work is highly valued in schools taking a stimulating and pragmatic approach to current issues in the classroom. He continues to work closely with the Institute of Education, London on long term school based projects as well as leading the Effective Teaching and Learning Network
