Subject and Team Leaders

A CPD/staff development course for teachers in UK Schools,
International Schools, Independent Schools, post-16 institutions and FE Colleges

Target Audience

Subject Leaders. Team Leaders. Heads of Department. Heads of Faculty. Senior Leadership Teams. Assistant Headteachers.

This course has been designed to give colleagues confidence and solutions to develop their skills as team leader and improve their own leadership. The emphasis of the course is on lesson observation, giving feedback, conducting reviews, listening, questioning, motivation and managing colleagues. An evidence base for determining the performance of staff and students will be established from which increased performance and potential of colleagues can be realised.
The approach emphasised is developmental, action based, forward looking with a belief that self esteem has to be recognised for learning and growth.

  • Tweaking existing frameworks
  • What to look for when observing a lesson
  • How to observe lessons for improvement
11.30 Session 3 Feedback

  • The use of constructive feedback in affecting change
  • Different styles of feedback
  • Written review statements and oral feedback

1.30 Session 4  Coaching skills for team leaders

  • Questioning skills and the range of techniques available
  • Listening skills and their application
  • Building rapport, trust and self worth
  • Setting goals for action
3.00 Session 5 Strategies for restoring performance

  • Understand factors that influence motivation
  • Know how to intervene in situations where practice is unacceptable
  • Do's and don'ts of how to deal with difficult situations

Course Leader

The course will be led by Chris Haines who is a full time trainer and coach. He has a background in school improvement and leading on learning. He works closely with many schools on improving teaching and learning in the classroom and the leadership of learning across the school. He is an expert on learning, assessment, leadership and school improvement. He has worked extensively in developing the coaching skills team leaders need for performance management and was a lead trainer for the performance management consultants. He has recently been coaching teachers on structuring lessons that are more interactive with students.
